This was important information for an engineer, in that it showed how waves might cause erosion along beaches and riverbanks. In this drawing, Leonardo depicts a circular wave as it meets a protruding barrier and reflects off the protrusion in a circular pattern. The same reflection pattern can be seen in the experiment duplicated here.
